February 2026

February is the month that we particularly venerate St Valentine (the name means worthy, strong, powerful), the patron saint of ‘courtly love’. We do this on the 14th when gallant men or women try to win the hand of a loved one or pledge enduring affection. Nobody quite knows who St. Valentine was but he is believed to have been martyred by the Romans for saving Christians from persecution. There is a lot of persecution going on in the world now which we could well do without but St. Valentine’s Day gives everyone a chance to act all soppy in a loving way to bring a smile to the face of that special person closest to us, but perhaps also to someone else secretly admired!

Not much snow yet, thank goodness, but they will need plenty in Milano and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy where the Winter Olympics are being held from the 6th February to 22nd February. Not the games that we do great at but Team GB believe they can achieve “the greatest Olympic performance we have ever seen at a winter Games” and are targeting a record-breaking eight medals next month in Milan-Cortina. Who will be pushing themselves to the limit on the ice and snow. We wish good and safe luck to all our athletes.
