Dear Readers and Advertisers

April showers bring May flowers, as they say, so bring on the blooms! While May might not quite be the official start of summer (that's one of June's important dates), it sure feels like it. May, the month of Bank Holidays (just 2 this year)! The 1st of May (celebrated on 6th this year)is known as “May Day” and traditionally involves dancing around a May Pole, crowning a May Queen, Morris Dancing and generally celebrating the oncoming summer.
Traditionally, a young tree would be felled and erected to dance around in celebration of the oncoming summer. Ribbons and flower garlands would add to a colourful display, fitting to a bright spring day of celebration. Celebrations and customs differ from country to culture, but the gist of the celebration is the same throughout. It is the month when spring slips into summer and winter seems ages ago and summer sports are in full swing. The FA Cup Final on 25th May (2nd bank holiday weekend), the crack of leather on willow will be heard on the cricket green, with ‘whang’ and ‘thang’ on the tennis courts as balls are whacked and shouts of fore on the golf course. If you’re are not the sporty type there is lots to do in the countryside and in this part of Kent we are surrounded by loads of it and it is all free. If you do want to spend some money then local fetes and fairs begin to happen and the volunteers who work tremendously hard to arrange these events will be pleased to see you and your family and ready to empty your purses and wallets.
